Mannheim Technical University of Applied Sciences is a modern campus university that qualifies around 5,100 students in nine faculties. The university is one of the leading universities for applied sciences in research and teaching and cooperates with many important companies. We offer a family-friendly, livable environment in the heart of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.
We are seeking to fill the following position for the „BioDigitalHub - SCAILE“ project starting January 1, 2027:
PhD Candidate (f/m/d) for the Modeling of Industrial Bioprocesses
EG 13 TV-L, 75% employment scope (29,625 hours/ week)
Reference number 6101 P
at the Department of Biotechnology (Prof. Sauer's research group).
Project Information
As part of the BioDigitalHub program, the Federal Ministry of Research & Technology is funding the SCAILE consortium, which—with 21 partners from industry and academia—will develop digital tools for the model-based scale-up of microbial fermentation processes.
In addition to standardizing process data and models, the focus is on creating a shared software platform for modeling and optimizing bioprocesses at the production scale. SCAILE addresses phenomena that are only partially amenable to classical scaling logic, particularly gradients, fluid dynamics, mass transfer, and physiological effects. Machine learning serves as a central methodological component for extracting scaling-relevant patterns from heterogeneous process data, determining conditions that are difficult to measure directly using (soft) sensors, and generalizing predictions across different scales.
At the Mannheim Technical University, the focus is on modeling and optimizing a microbial fermentation process that is used on a production scale by an industry partner. The goal is to develop mechanistic, data-driven, and hybrid models and to calibrate and validate them using real process data.
Key Responsibilities
- Development of mechanistic, hybrid, and data-driven model components to describe various biological and physical phenomena in a microbial fermentation process at a partner company
- Model calibration and validation using process data
- Model-based (multicriteria) optimization of the process
- Collaboration on the standardization of data and process models within the consortium
- Ongoing exchange with academic and industrial partners
- Publication of research results in scientific journals and reports.
Requirements:
- A completed academic degree (Master’s/University Diploma) in Bioprocess Engineering, Biotechnology, Computational Biology, or a comparable field, with above-average grades (minimum grade of 2.0 in German grading system)
- In-depth knowledge of fermentation process modeling using mechanistic modeling approaches
- In-depth knowledge of data-driven modeling and machine learning, ideally in the context of bioprocess engineering; knowledge of hybrid modeling of bioprocesses is desirable
- Extensive programming experience, ideally in Python or gPROMS
- Practical experience with laboratory-scale fermentations is desirable
- Strong communication skills and openness to collaboration with industry
- Ability and willingness to work independently in a scientific and goal-oriented manner, including publishing
- Results-oriented and a team player
- Very good written and spoken English (at least C1) as well as basic German language skills (A2)
- High degree of independence, analytical skills, and decision-making ability
We offer you:
- Applied research in close collaboration with a global industry partner and as part of a consortium with numerous leading players in the German bioprocess engineering sector
- Doctoral degree through the consortium partner RWTH Aachen (Prof. J Magnus)
- State-of-the-art IT equipment with the freedom to choose your preferred hardware
- public sector benefits under the TV-L collective bargaining agreement, such as a company pension plan, capital-forming benefits, and an annual bonus
- Work-life balance and the ability to balance family and career through flexible working hours, centralized support services through “Together on Campus,” and voiio
- Entitlement to educational leave
- days off on December 24th and December 31st
- Workplace health management initiatives, university sports, and corporate fitness
- Work in a convenient location with excellent VRN and DB connections, nextbike bike-sharing, and JobBike
- Travel expense reimbursements when using the Job Ticket
- Mannheim University of Applied Sciences has been awarded the “Total E-Quality” designation.
